HGST, Seagate, Toshiba and WD Form New Group

Santa Clara, Calif., Aug. 13, 2013 Where is your data? Today, storage industry leaders HGST, Seagate, Toshiba and WD announced a new organization, the Storage Products Association (SPA), as a new voice for the storage industry to answer just that question.

The SPA debuted this week at the Flash Memory Summit, where participants from member companies participated in a panel titled, "Solid State Hybrid Drives Help Meet Today's Storage Requirements" to discuss the role of hard disk drives and solid state hybrid drives. John Rydning, IDC research vice president for hard disk drives, moderated the panel.

Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) is a category of storage that incorporates NAND flash, solid state memory into a hard drive's architecture, resulting in a single, integrated device. SSHD is a more precise term than the more general term "Hybrid Drive," which has previously been used to describe both SSHD devices as well non-integrated combinations of Solid State Drives (SSD) and Hard Disk Drives (HDD).

The range of "Hybrid" storage technologies that combine NAND flash memory or SSDs with HDD technology are defined as follows:
